LEVEL 4: Executive Coaching
DEFINITION: The Executive Coach is a highly trained individual hired by an executive to give him or her good and effective feedback about performance and future goals for the organization.
BENEFITS: Coaching has three goals: establishing and maintaining trust; facilitating mutual learning; enhancing growth toward individuals acting autonomously, while at the same time acting interdependently with the group.
Executive coaching can really enhance the confidence, performance, and effectiveness of the person being coached. When you think about cost and ramifications of letting someone fail, the choice is usually clear.
STRUCTURE: Coaching is best when tailored to fit the schedule of the person being coached.
CASE STUDY: In each of the three case studies cited above, coaching was used as a natural follow-up activity. To train, consult, or facilitate activities and events without follow-up coaching is a waste of everyone's time and money.
We have been Executive Coaches in many different settings. In one instance, a CEO was anticipating a company merger. She did not know how best to proceed. She had all the knowledge and skills necessary to move forward. Our role was coaching her to recognize that knowledge and those skills. She needed us to ask her the right questions. We then assisted her in applying her knowledge and skills to create an environment for a successful merger.
